Fishing

Most of the rivers in the region flow south to the Solway Firth. The defining geographical feature of Newton Stewart is the River Cree, the “silvery winding Cree’. With it’s tributaries, the Minnoch, the Trool, the Penkiln and the Palnure, the Cree drains the south-west flanks of the ‘Range of the Awful Hand’, the labyrinthe range of mountains and lochs, bogs, burns and crags, rising at it’s highest to the Merrick (2764 ft above sea level), 12 miles to the north and visible from Newton Stewart

The Galloway Estate owns 5 miles of double bank fishing, starting a mile above Newton Stewart, with some 20 named pools. The water is divided into 3 beats, 3 rods per beat and rods move beat every day. Catches in the Spring and early summer have been minimal but August through to the end of the season in mid October can provide good sport. Sea trout and brown trout can also be caught. One beat of 3 rods for 3 days will be included in the cost for those renting Cumloden for 6 days or more. We would ask that guests confirm that they would like to take up this option at the time of booking. If additional days/rods are required we will endeavour to provide them but the last 3 months, in particular, get booked up very early so as much notice as possible should be given.Three salmon and three trout rods will be provided for guests use. The ghillie will be on hand to help and provide flies (at a price) if required. Waders and other equipment can be purchased in Newton Stewart.
